"I need feminism because when I was being sexually harassed by a stranger and I threw my ice cream on him, he ran after me and pushed it in my chest. After kicking and punching him away, I was told that it was my fault because I threw the ice cream "first."
We need feminism because….Rosie Jimenez, Becky Bell, Marissa Alexander, Renisha McBride, Brandon Teena, Trayvon Martin, Mallory Loyola, Dr. George Tiller, Gwen Araujo…all people we must speak out for and with as we fight for reproductive justice, transgender anti-discrimination, racial justice, LGBT equality and reform of the criminal justice system —- which are all feminist issues!
I need feminism because the first time I was sexually harassed about my chest I was 12 and in gym class. Even though I was uncomfortable it did not occur to me to tell the teacher because I was thinking boys will be boys.
I need feminism because some drunk male friends I sat with after a wedding spent hours making joke about hang raping me and got agressive becaise I wasn’t playing along.
Afterwards, I felt like I had let my boyfriend down by letting myself be alone with them.
I have known all of these men for years and though of them as friends. I need feminism because I thought that it was safe and socially acceptable to have a drink and a chat with old friends who happen to be male. I was wrong!
The world needs feminism because in school I was taught feminism meant you hated men, didn’t shave, hated wearing a bra, and were very hated by men and women alike (that alone pushed me away from feminism).
I need feminism because I’m tired of feeling like my life doesn’t truly begin until I meet “the one.” I don’t need a man by my side to kick ass at life.
Nobody needs to believe that they have to wait for man to enter the picture in order to fully live their lives. Being single is enormously empowering! You don’t need the help of anybody to make a mark on this earth.
